GREENSBORO – Chancellor Frank Gilliam is proud of UNC Greensboro’s recent ranking by U.S. News & World Report as the No. 1 university in North Carolina for social mobility.1
Not only that, Gilliam notes in the accompanying video, but UNCG is one of just five universities in the country with more than 50% of students eligible for low-income Pell grants and a graduation rate of more than 50%.
Gilliam attributes that in part to the demographic balance of UNCG’s students – the school is rated the most-diverse national university in the UNC System, whether measured by race and ethnicity, Pell-eligible students or first-generation status.2
“We think we provide a high-quality education at a very reasonable cost to the broadest group of students in the state. We’re accessible, affordable and excellent,” Gilliam says.
“And that’s important – it’s important to the future prosperity of the state. Seventy-seven percent of our alums stay local, stay in the state of North Carolina.”

2 Other schools in the UNC System place an emphasis on social mobility as well. For five years, Winston-Salem State University ranked among the top 20 colleges and universities in the nation for aiding the social and economic advancement of its students: https://hew.aveltsagency.com/2018/10/wssu-social-mobility/.
